I have given many talks over the years about my experiences and adventures in musical theatre over a 25 year career working with legends of stage and screen including Luciano Pavarotti, Ginger Rogers, Cleo Laine and Joan Sutherland.
My talks are fun and energetic, with tales of life in musical theatre, the great shows, working with some of the great performers, the blunders, the laughter and stories behind the scenes. To bring it to life I also give short performances with songs from the shows and the stories told.
Most of my talks are for local community groups and associations looking for light entertainment for their members. Quite often the group will get involved in the form of a sing-along, as we reminisce over some of the classic songs from the theatre.
Here is a synopsis of my talks which I started in 2008, and have captured audiences in both the private and public sector throughout all the home counties and beyond; audiences have called these talks “Enthralling”.
For those interested in my talks, I’m available to give them at any time with relatively short notice (subject to my availability). I have my own sound system with microphones.

My Theatre Talks:
” Another Opening, Another Show !”
An amusing, anecdotal account of my exciting musical career singing opposite legendary names including:
- Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti at The Edinburgh Festival
- Cleo Lane in the musical Showboat at The Adelphi Theatre, London
- Ginger Rogers in the musical “Mame” at The Royal, Drury Lane
I recreated the singing voice of Peter O’Toole for the film, “Man of La Mancha“. This was specifically for the song ‘The Impossible Dream‘, which in some quarters is seen as being “the definitive version !” This song is featured in this program with other songs which are always well received.
You will see the following reference to me, Simon Gilbert, on Wikipedia in the information about Man of La Mancha
O’Toole’s singing voice was deemed to be inadequate, and was re-recorded by Simon Gilbert.
Joan was a scream. After singing a very difficult aria in rehearsal, she stamps off stage, saying, “ Jesus Christ, I could’ve sung it better in the bloody bath !”
Luciano (Pavarotti) was a sweetie. When we sang the Boheme duet together, he said;
You cannot taka de breath in theesa place, becoze you well ruina de sensa of what ees saying de charactere !” An unforgettable master class with the maestro.
Ginger (Rogers) thanked me for “ Your dear performances ”in “Mame” and presented me on the stage of The Drury Lane Theatre with the whole company present with a wonderful wedding present of salad bowls and other accoutrements….first time she’d ever given anything to anyone !!
My performance of The Impossible Dream won more acclaim than the original performance on Broadway !! Below is a recent performance in April 2013;
From Opera to The Musicals – A Singer’s Approach
A light hearted discourse on the various styles and voices that the singer uses in his career; I take the audience in song through Comic Opera, Gilbert and Sullivan and The Musicals to songs made famous by Nat “King” Cole and Matt Monro. There is some audience participation in the Gilbert and Sullivan item which is great fun.
Against All The Odds
Everybody knows how difficult the theatrical profession can be. This is an inspirational account of the struggles and setbacks that I faced and overcame on my path to become an established performer and producer; the tough side of the theatrical/musical profession that audiences find most revealing. Told with humour, stories and songs
