Owing to the deluge of new members The Choir has had to move its original rehearsal from St Mary Magdalene Church vestry toThe Holy Trinity Church hall, Winchmore Hill Green N21 2AD; members find the new venue far more condusive in terms of size, comfort and locality. Rehearsals are still from 11.00 am till 1.00 pm every Monday morning
With the huge interest in singing for health, confidence, social activity and general well being why not join us at Winchmore Hill on Monday mornings, or at our evening rehearsal every Tuesday evening 7.00 pm till 9.00 pm at Millfield Arts Centre, Silver Street, Edmonton N18. Great songs, great atmosphere, great people.
Don’t miss the opportunity to be at our first major performance ” Let The People Sing !” at The Dugdale Centre on Sunday 18th May at 4.00 pm
This will have the choir singing all their most popular pieces including some great new compositions and surprise items.
The audience is invited to join in at every opportunity.
The choir will be joined by The Freezywater Junior Choir singing some exciting songs from their own repertoire which will set the room alight. Making her debut will be star soprano Linda Watts who has performed at all the main London concert venues as well as being guest artiste on the popular Radio 3 programme Friday Night Is Music Night.
Monday 10th February 2014 saw the launch of my second Enfield Community Singers choir group in Enfield, a new daytime choir which will meet at St Mary Magdalene Church between 11.00 am to 1.00 pm every Monday.
The lead up to the launch was featured in the Enfield Advertiser newspaper, who did a small article on the new choir entitled “That will make their day – community choir sets up group for the over 50s”
We had a fantastic turnout, with twenty seven people attending. It was also great to hear many report afterwards how much they had enjoyed the first session.
There may be lots of work to put in to people who have no musical background, although I can say there was a really good vocal sound. Onwards and upwards from here!!!
If you enjoy singing, why not get in touch or come along to one of our rehearsals? For more information on the choir see the Community Singers page
Hearing of the recent death of Sir Peter O’Toole reminded me of the most significant moment of my career when I was contracted to sing, not only the song The Impossible Dream for Peter O’Toole in the 1972 United Artiste’ film ‘Man of La Mancha’, but the whole musical sound track. Songs including ‘The Impossible Dream’, ‘I am I’, ‘Dulcinea’ and ‘I, Don Quixote’.
I was appearing as an understudy in the musical “Showboat” with Cleo Lane at the time that the film was being shot on location in Spain. Peter was due to sing everything in the film including The Impossible Dream; however both he and the management decided that, owing possibly to the fact that he regularly drank a bottle of whisky per day and smoked fifty Gauloise a day, he wasn’t quite able to meet the rigours of this demanding song.
So they cast about on the film set to find a vocal match and, finding nobody who fitted the bill, came to The Adelphi Theatre, where we were performing in Showboat. After auditioning all the guys in the show, including principals, they finally got to me and, after five takes of the song, gave me the contract to sing all the music. A very exciting time indeed as I had the conductor of the film together with the producer in our flat in Kilburn, coaching me in every nuance of O’Toole’s speaking and singing voice.
When it came to doing the actual recording they very cleverly edited sections that were Peter and parts that were me, so that, in the end, one wouldn’t be able to tell which was me and which was him.
A wonderfully exciting time!! In the video below I sing ‘The Impossible Dream‘ once again ( filmed in April 2013)

The group, which has expanded and gone from strength to strength since forming in February last year, will be bringing Let The People Sing! to the church, in Green Lanes, on Sunday July 21, starting at 3pm.
As the title suggests, the audience will be more than welcome to join in as the choir performs popular standard classics from yesteryear, including Edelweiss, Unforgettable, Moon River, Bright Eyes, Consider Yerself and Waterloo.
Choral director Simon Gilbert, who has spent much of his working life involved in music, hopes the concerts will be a success and will encourage others to join the choir, which is now regularly attended by between 30 and 35 people each week.
The Enfield Community Singers proudly performed as part of the celebrations for St Georges Day on Saturday 27th April 2013 at The Wonder public house in Enfield, North London.
As part of the celebrations there were a great variety of performances from local musicians and performers which were beautifully captured by local cameraman Thomas Webster, who has put together this fantastic short film covering the activities and events during the day.
Thank you to Tom for allowing us to use the video on our website. You can find more of Tom’s work on YouTube or on Thomas Webster’s website
I realised how significant it was when I promote my choir groups; that singing for just half an hour floods the brain with the feel good chemical oxytocin. After an hour of singing, choir members have a higher level of antibodies, building their immune system and lowering stress levels.
This is totally what I believe. So for all those stressed people out there who need a recharge, build energy levels and fight off winter colds, you’ll DEFINITELY benefit from joining one of my choirs. It’s tremendous fun and there is a great atmosphere!
Come along and join us!
Monday Morning Choir Group – 11.00 am till 1.00 pm at St Mary Magdalene Church, Windmill Hill, Enfield EN2
Tuesday Evening Choir Group – 7.00 pm till 9.00 pm at The Millfield Arts Centre, Silver Street, Edmonton N18
A tuneful new treatment is being used to help patients with lung conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and emphysema. Research has shown that singing along to your favourite tunes can ease breathlessness and vastly improve quality of life — and now Britain’s top hospitals are using singing lessons to treat patients.
Dr Nicholas Hopkinson, consultant respiratory physician at Brompton Hospital says that singing tones our diaphragm and abdominal muscles and gets us to develop deeper breathing. What a joy to know that we can get fitter with singing !!

A new choir for people of all ages and musical abilities will open in Enfield later this month. Simon Gilbert, a former West End singer, is launching the choir, called Let the People Sing, following the success of similar projects including Gareth Malone’s Military Wives.
Choirs are definitely becoming a big thing and getting more popular with all age groups, but we have really started capturing the older age group.
